Japanese Phoenix (Houou) Tattoo – Session 3
January 17, 2009
I finally have gotten around to getting some decent photos of the finished Japanese Phoenix tattoo up on the site (thanks to Mikayla’s incredible photography skills). My last sitting with Ron was sometime mid November and he finished up all the color work, highlights and final touch-up work. It truly came out to be a great piece to be proud of and a great reminder for me. Enjoy the photos.
(Session Time: ~2 hours | Total Time: ~6 hours)

Great write-ups and beautiful tattoo. I was especially interested in your observations of pain levels since I am going to be getting a large piece like this done soon.

Hey Bobby, thanks for visiting the site. Glad you enjoyed the write-up and the work. The pain level was pretty intense (especially the line work). The worst of the pain was towards the back of the leg, just above the calf (just below the joint) and also the area going directly over the shin (as there’s no fat/muscle to soften the blow).
If you’re going for something this large, your leg will swell up ALOT. The day after my outline, my leg swelled up so much, I would have thought something was terribly wrong if Ron hadn’t forewarned me about the swelling.
Some advice: For large pieces, break it down into several small sessions (2-3 hours). Also, pop some ibuprofen before you go and drink LOTS of water.
